UV/IR blocking filter has a sharp-cut off to combat unwanted UV and infrared light. Use of this filter prevents color casts and blurring for digital cameras where the IR barrier in front of the image sensor still displays some residual transmittance. The 486 filter does not achieve this by absorption via coloured glass, but instead by interference. A number of wafer-thin reflective layers with a precisely calculated thickness achieve the UV/IR cut-off.
